Job Description

Argonne is seeking a transportation systems modeler to work on our high-performance, agent-based travel demand and transportation system simulation framework, POLARIS, and improve its models of transit agency scheduling and service design, vehicle routing algorithms for drones and road vehicles, location decisions for freight companies, electrification of transit and freight, and ridesharing and ride-matching algorithms for micromobility and transportation network companies (TNC). POLARIS has two components – passenger and freight – which are integrated in the same software. The software is used for performing detailed simulations of large-scale transportation systems. The passenger component simulates the decision making of travelers, transit agencies, TNCs, and micromobility operators. The freight component simulates the decision making of firms who provide long-distance or last-mile delivery services. Based on the decision making of all these agents, the resulting traffic is simulated in high detail, and in turn, the state of the network affects the activities of these agents. The goal of POLARIS simulations is to analyze future scenarios to reach mobility improvement, decarbonization, and equity goals. In order to set up these scenarios in an informed manner, optimization models are required to be developed such as setting transit frequencies optimally. Moreover, some of the components in POLARIS such as ride-matching of TNCs also require optimization models that run dynamically within the simulation.

This position provides an exciting opportunity to work at a top-tier National Lab, interact with world-class faculty and Lab scientists, work on transformative solutions to transportation problems and live in the Chicago area, a global metropolis with stunning architecture, leading cultural and educational institutions, a vibrant economy and a major transportation hub.

Position Requirements

  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field and four or more years of work experience in the field.

  • Knowledge in operations research, large-scale optimization, and transportation service and freight operations.

  • Knowledge of engineering computation as applied to transportation system modeling and planning.

  • Knowledge in agent-based modeling and simulations, familiarity with POLARIS is preferable.

  • Skills and experience in software programming (e.g., Python, AMPL, C++).

  • Skills in decision making.

  • Skills to roadmap from specific problems to general solutions.

  • Skilled in the use of high-performance computer technolog.y

  • Ability to plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases for projects of moderate scope.

  • Skilled oral and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.

A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork. This position description documents the general nature and level of work but is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all activities, duties and responsibilities required of job incumbent. Consequently, job incumbent may be required to perform other duties as assigned.
