Argonne is seeking a talented project and communications manager for its Communications and Public Affairs team to primarily support both the Environment, Safety, and Health directorate (ESH) and the Quality, Work Planning, and Analysis (QWPA) office. The communications (senior) manager is tasked with developing and executing communications plans based on the Laboratory’s operational goals and priorities. The communications manager will have the opportunity to create and reshape communications channels, innovate with internal communications tactics, and further Argonne’s culture of safety, diversity, and innovation.

The successful candidate will work with leaders and professionals from ESH and QWPA operational organizations to maximize the understanding of programs, policies, and activities that ensure operational success. The communications manager will also coordinate within the Laboratory to ensure that messaging and activities are aligned with those of the Laboratory, and have the support of Laboratory leaders, scientists, and staff.

As a member of Argonne’s Communications and Public Affairs division, the communications manager will be able to leverage the expertise and support of teams of writers, designers, video producers, photographers, media relations professionals, web and social media experts, and event coordinators. Initial focus of this role is on safety and quality communications, and the focus may expand or shift over time. As a member of the communications team, the individual may also occasionally support labwide projects and activities for other departments within the organization.

Primary Activities:

  • Report to the Head of Internal and Executive Communications.
  • Serve as communications project leader, producing effective and timely communications, documents, brochures, videos, website content, and other materials that promote a positive awareness of Argonne’s accomplishments, priorities, and successes to internal audiences.
  • Provide communications support and guidance for Argonne initiatives and projects, including long- and short-term strategic planning assistance.
  • Coordinate and execute original communications activities, products, publications, and events through detailed communications plans.
  • Understand the work of the Laboratory and including key priorities, objectives, sponsors, and partners.
  • Build relationships with Laboratory leaders and staff.
  • Attending staff meetings, planning workshops, and other meetings to learn about key messaging needs.
  • Write a variety of communications including articles, reports, internal memos, and web copy.
  • Ensure that communications products align with overall Laboratory messaging and branding.
  • Work through influence at varying levels within an organization to achieve a common communications goal.
  • Seek opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Argonne communications.
  • Support other activities within the department as assigned.

This position is a part time (60%) with the potential to move into full time based on business needs. This position is also expected to be performed in a hybrid-work environment, which is a combination of on-site and remote to allow for collaboration.

Position Requirements

  • Communications generalist with experience across a range of skills including writing, media relations, events, digital, and social media.
  • Knowledge of best practices in internal communications and employee engagement.
  • Skill in effectively implementing strategic communications plans and evaluating their impact.
  • Understanding of diverse workforce needs for a population with a significant number of international employees and users/visitors where English is not their native language.
  • Ability to produce timely and effective communications for high-visibility Laboratory programs, including emergency and time-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other Communications team members with expertise in creative, events and writing.
  • Experience in working under pressure, maintaining integrity and confidentiality of information.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication and interpersonal relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to prepare presentations and updates for a variety of internal audiences, venues, and purposes, tailoring the message and deliverables accordingly.
  • Strong expertise in Microsoft suite; including Word, PowerPoint, Excel. Knowledge of digital internal communications platforms and tools (e.g., Granicus, Qualtrics, SmartSheet, Microsoft forms, Visix, HTML, Photoshop).
  • Steward of Lab resources.
  • Passion for the outreach role as well as the mission of the Lab.

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 6+ years’ experience, or equivalent
