As a Animal Health Shipping Coordinator, you will manage import and export of research animals in the BRU under the direction of a BRU Veterinarian. The ideal caregiver for this position has a customer service background, is a very good communicator, and has worked in an animal research setting previously. The caregiver should have a background in science and/or veterinary medicine.

Responsibilities:

  • Organizes import/export of animals to and from outside institutions or non-standard vendors, including data collection, record keeping, document preparation, courier scheduling and shipment tracking, including all appropriate documentation for international shipments.
  • Acts as primary source of information and communication with outside institutions and non-standard vendors who ship/receive animals from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
  • Communicates with internal and external researchers about import and export of research animals.
  • Organizes and manages quarantine animal schedule for all animals received from non-approved vendors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Certifications:

  • Assist Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certifications from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) are preferred.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • At least three years of experience as an Animal Husbandry Technician or demonstrated expertise in the custodial care of animals.
  • AALAS certification at the LAT level may be substituted for experience requirements.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and transport supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing over 50 pounds; significant amount of standing, bending, and walking; must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors and sights, as well as animal bites and scratches; must have the ability to complete the job before leaving work.
  • Animal care is a 7-day per week, 365-days per year job. All tasks must be performed to fulfill guidelines according to regulations.
  • Must be willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the BRU.
  • May be required to work with biological, chemical, and radiation hazards after proper training.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
