Job Description

Summary

The highly interactive lab focuses on how carotenoids, a class of colorful compounds in fruits and vegetables, are absorbed, metabolized and promote maternal and child health. Lab members are encouraged to engage in opportunities to advance their professional skills and scientific expertise. The applicant works effectively on a team and has a zest for scientific achievement. Job tasks will include working with biologic materials (human cell lines, blood, and tissues), analytical chemistry of carotenoids and other dietary compounds (extractions and HPLC), and molecular biology lab analyses (PCR, qRT-PCR, Western blotting) under established procedures to assure personal and lab safety. Staff are cross-trained and assist with human studies by contacting participants, collecting data, and organizing data. Experience in and comprehension of any or all these techniques is prioritized. Please submit a transcript of coursework (unofficial transcripts are acceptable) along with application materials.

Job Duties

  • Prepares and conducts laboratory cell culture and lab animal research experiments.
  • Assists with human research studies by contacting participants and conducting research visits.
  • Collects, compiles, and analyzes data.
  • Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Documents results of experiments in lab notebooks and maintains appropriate electronic documentation.
  • Selects, evaluates, applies, and troubleshoots techniques used in routine research.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and equipment. Maintains related databases of lab inventory.
  • Assists in manuscript and grant preparation as needed.
  • Maintains lab safety compliance records.
  • Engages in good laboratory practices such as keeping the laboratory area clean and organized, and following appropriate safety protocols.
  • Performs routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Participates in the scholarship of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a basic or applied medical science or in related field. 
  • Experience working in the lab and interest in nutrition is a plus.
  • Be able to work independently and follow both oral and written instructions.
