Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for all areas of on premises virtualization implementation and integration, including support of: hardware, operating systems, security, data protection, performance monitoring and tuning, cloud integration, capacity planning, storage allocation, workload management, and problem determination/ resolution; recommend, evaluate and implement any tools, add-ons or plug-ins; contribute to the growth, reduction, or modification of the virtual environment by detecting usage patterns, interpreting data, and making decisions based upon this data; share knowledge, provide recommendations to management, and collaborate with teammates; provide insight including details such as billing and cost estimates as needed.
- Analyze, design, implement, manage and maintain the University’s enterprise virtualization environment; actively seek opportunities to improve existing practices and procedures; apply technical knowledge of networks, operating systems and utilities to the virtualization environment; create or edit baselines and baseline groups; troubleshoot and repair any virtualization issues; maintain system performance via monitoring, logfile analysis, and performance tuning; troubleshoot system hardware, software, and operating system issues as needed.
- Ensure performance, uptime, and security of IT managed servers (both physical and virtual) meet the needs of the users; acquire, install, or upgrade components and software to help meet these needs; make sizing recommendations and help implement automation as needed; maintain and implement security policies as needed or directed; configure, maintain and deploy Group Policies as needed or directed; train and collaborate others as needed; provide technical support and guidance for projects and issues related to enterprise systems and infrastructure.
- Perform initial configuration of new IT managed servers and infrastructure (both physical and virtual); install and configure current University approved software; ensure configuration of access rights for backup/recovery, and monitoring / management; perform recovery of failed systems in the event of a disaster or mishap; perform operating system troubleshooting as needed; implement consistent system configuration on new and existing servers.
- Report potential problems to local administrators and coordinate corrective action as required; provide Tier 2 & 3 support to local administrators as needed; act as administrator and provide guidance or recommendations on any systems that may not have local administrators assigned within various departments and/or University business units.
- Respond to and take corrective action in response to system alarms and failures; analyze console messages and logfiles; use vendor manuals and other documentation to resolve problems as needed; contact and communicate job and/or system status with applicable support personnel, vendors and University Operations; on-call availability required during downtime events.
- Work collaboratively with the University’s security team and other business units and departments to help adopt and implement effective security practices on IT managed enterprise systems and infrastructure.
- Work with appropriate staff and vendors to implement, evaluate and report on special project activities; assist with creation and/or modification of any applicable procedural documentation as required; collect, analyze and report on any applicable data to help track project outcomes; generate and present reports and graphical summaries as requested.
- Manage and maintain Solarwinds; maintain a level of technical knowledge consistent with assigned responsibilities; read, understand, and interpret technical literature; attend applicable training sessions.
- Serve as backup to the Enterprise Systems Administrator, and Senior Infrastructure Analyst.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
