Job Description

The School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering (AME) in the Gallogly College of Engineering at the University of Oklahoma seeks candidates for a tenure-track position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. This position is part of a larger initiative defined in the Gallogly College of Engineering strategic plan for growing enrollment and improving retention. The State of Oklahoma is investing in engineering in support of growing engineering graduates for the state workforce.

The aerospace industry is enjoying significant growth in the state of Oklahoma and enrollment in the aerospace engineering program continues to rise.  The Oklahoma Aerospace Defense and Innovation Institute at the university supports advanced technologies and sustainment for aerospace. Candidates seeking to work in a rapidly-growing School and College, in collegial interdisciplinary groups, and towards the mission of student success, are encouraged to apply. 

We seek candidates with expertise on space structures who will contribute to the cluster on materials and manufacturing in the College.  Candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas are of particular interest for the position: 

• structural configuration analysis for spacecraft and satellites

• analysis of loads, stresses, stiffness and fatigue of structures during space missions

• development of new materials for space applications

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty members in the cluster and develop a nationally recognized research program in one or more of the areas listed above.  In addition, successful candidates will teach related courses, and mentor and guide students with an ethos of care and support.  

Department and Region: AME currently has 31 full-time faculty members and over 650 undergraduate and 95 graduate students. Currently, both AME and the Gallogly College of Engineering are experiencing strong growth in research, corporate and private donations, and student enrollment. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in aeronautical or astronautical engineering or in a related field.  Preference will be given to candidates with a growing research program on structural applications in space.

Candidates are invited to submit (1) a cover letter; (2) a research plan describing the problems to be studied, funding avenues to be explored and mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students; (3) a curriculum vitae; (4) copies of three research publications; and (5) a list of at least three references.

Review of candidates will begin on January 26, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. The start date for the position is expected to be August 16, 2024.
