The Assistant Director for Care and Conduct reports to the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life for Residential Learning. Serve as a resource, case manager, and liaison for residential students. Provide management, direction, and training for the housing conduct system in close partnership with the Dean of Students and Student Conduct offices. Collaborate closely with the Dean of Students Office, Student Conduct Office, Title IX Office and University Police to provide follow-up support to students navigating challenges in our residence halls. A member of the residential learning leadership team, this position supports providing direction, training and guidance to the residential learning team.

Job Function:

Provide management, direction, and training for the housing conduct system in close partnership with the Dean of Students and Student Conduct offices. Collaborate closely with the Dean of Students Office, Student Conduct Office, Title IX Office and University Police to provide follow-up support to students navigating challenges in our residence halls. A member of the residential learning leadership team, this position supports providing direction, training and guidance to the residential learning team.

Minimum Education:

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in college student personnel, student development, higher education, counseling, management, public administration, sociology, social work, public health administration, educational psychology or related field.

Preferred Education:

Master's from an accredited institution in a discipline represented within student affairs administration.

Minimum Experience:

Two years full-time management or administrative experience in college or university.
Experience in one or more of the following (1) addressing college student misconduct in a university setting, (2) experience working with proactive and immediate follow-up strategies in response to student of concern cases, or (3) experience providing risk assessment and crisis response.

Preferred Experience:

Experience supervising staff.
Two or more years of progressively more responsible supervisory experience in campus residential environments
Professional, live-in residence hall or student housing staff experience.
Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and deadlines while responding to frequent interruptions
Ability to apply current student learning and development theories and research.
Knowledge of Maxient student conduct database system.
Knowledge of the NaBITA risk rubrics.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead Case Manager:
    Serve as department coordinator and case manager to address needs of students experiencing significant challenges in areas involving conduct, relationships, social adjustment, psychological, financial, and/or academics. Coordinate departmental conduct and care procedures and responses to ensure the community and individual residents receive timely, appropriate and consistent process, communication and support. Facilitate meetings to provide support and follow up for discipline and student of concern cases. Manage student residential concerns through a variety of interventions, referrals, and follow-up services in collaboration with other University departments. Provide direction and guidance to professional and graduate team members for students of concern interventions. Inform supervisor of pertinent ongoing student of concern situations.
    Serve as the Maxient Administrator for the department. Maintain accurate and timely case documentation using established database and procedures. Communicate procedural and database efficiency and critical issues to supervisor.
  • Conduct Disciplinary Hearings:
    Provide supervision and support to professional and graduate staff in student conduct processes including discipline and damage processes, interpret and insure compliance with residence hall policies, university regulations and the law. Hear high level conduct cases usually involving allegations of physical assault, disruptive behavior, or violations causing high community impact. Hear conduct appeals often addressing serious/high-level conduct cases involving violations related to drugs, alcohol, or physical/verbal assault. Collaborate with Student Conduct on overall case management and philosophy.
  • Care Response:
    Provide leadership for professional and student staff in providing supportive response to individuals and communities affected by serious or large-scale incidents. Participate in Behavior Intervention Team. Collaborate with the Dean of Students Office in communications with students and families in response to crises and to facilitate care within parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Seek to support parents and develop a partnership with them serving the best interest of students.
  • Night Staff Supervision:
    Assume responsibility for the recruitment, selection, training and written evaluation of professional Night Staff Supervisors, student Night Assistants and Care and Conduct Graduate Assistants. Through directing, coaching, mentoring, and evaluating staff, ensure staff perform assigned responsibilities in prescribed methods in accordance to standards established by department leadership. Regularly collect input from students, student and professional staff to provide annual formal evaluations, as well as on-going informal feedback. Meet regularly with professional staff individually to facilitate effective job performance as well as provide on-going professional development. Train professional and student staff on crisis response, on call protocols, and reporting expectations.
  • Professional and Graduate Staff Training:
    Collaborate with campus partners to coordinate and provide training, guidance, and support for Housing and Residence Life staff in discipline and damage, interpreting and insuring compliance with residence hall policies, university regulations and the law as they implement a care and conduct process. Develop and implement programs and procedures for training of professional and student staff, includes workshops, classes, in-service meetings and professional developments activities. Foster the on-going development of professional and graduate staff by providing regular formal and informal feedback. Meet regularly with professional and graduate staff to support their on-going learning and growth related to the various skills necessary to effectively coordinate and manage a premier approach to care and conduct in a university housing program. Participate in the recruitment, selection and training of professional, graduate and student hall staff.
  • Policy, Procedure, and Practice:
    Serve as a member of the Housing and Residence Life Leadership team and participate in Housing Leadership on-call duty. Participate in regular review and evaluation of department policy, procedure, and practice as it pertains to student conduct, crisis response and department’s proactive and reactive approach to supporting students with mental, physical and/or health related concerns.
  • Participate as a Member of Departmental Leadership Team:
    Participate in the creation and implementation of the strategic plan for residential learning. Lead departmental committees. Maintain strong liaison relationships with a variety of university resources including, but not limited to, Office of Student Life, Title IX Compliance, Center for Survivor Support, Multicultural Center, Disability Services, Health Center, Counseling Center, and University Police. Collaborate in the development of department initiatives, policy, practice and protocols.
  • Data Collection and Reporting:
    Maintain weekly records of number and type of interactions with residents and housing staff, responses to crisis and emergency situations, and other interactions with residents/staff. Gather, evaluate, and assess both student conduct and student care data to create sustainable and impactful change in operations, policies, and processes. Provide routine data, quantitative and qualitative reports on resident behavior, students in distress, students of concern and other information as needed. Support tracking and reporting of Clery numbers to Clery Compliance Officer.
  • Represent the department at various activities and other university functions. Promote the development of stronger relationships between the housing and residence life area and other areas of the University.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
