Job Description

Under supervision, perform skilled and non-skilled duties related to facility maintenance complying with appropriate regulations and codes.

Ball State University is seeking two Temporary Building Mechanics.

Job Function:

Under supervision, perform skilled and non-skilled duties related to facility maintenance complying with appropriate regulations and codes.

Minimum Education:

High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

1.Vocational School Training

Minimum Experience:

1. Successful completion of an apprenticeship program in either Electricity, Plumbing, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning or Carpentry as approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, or six (6) years of proof of experience in the above trade(s), or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired as determined by Ball State University.
2.Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, and University policies, procedures and communications, and perform mathematical calculations.
3.Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy.
4.Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
5.You must be 18 years or older.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform tasks related to the carpentry trade; construct, erect, remodel, maintain and repair building and facilities; general construction of walls, floors, ceilings and related areas; construction and repair of millwork and cabinetry; installations and repair of doors and door screens, windows and window screens, and related hardware; installation of metal, wood, and plastic moldings and trim, floor, wall, ceiling, coverings, and tile; removal and replacement of block, brick, and masonry surfaces; installation and repair of wall surfaces like drywall, plaster and paneling through final surface finishing; installation of all types of auxiliary hardware; installation and repair of all types of caulking and grouting; and all other carpentry related tasks as needed or assigned.
  • Perform tasks related to the electrical trade: repair electrical equipment; install, repair and replace switches, receptacles, incandescent/fluorescent light fixtures, bulbs and ballasts; repair and replace fans, motors, belts, thermostats, baseboard heaters, stats, limits, and elements; replace water heater elements, smoke detectors and any equipment provided with a plug type disconnecter; install and replace garbage disposals; repair T.V. lines and adapters; perform investigative procedures in regards to photo cells, contacters, relays, switches, etc.; and perform other electrical tasks as needed or assigned.
  • Perform tasks related to the plumbing trade: repair and replace plumbing fixtures, including tub, lavatory, sink, stool, urinal, water fountains, garbage disposals, etc. and all hardware necessary to operate these fixtures; install, repair and replace valves, traps, supply lines, seats, stems, and filters in water, steam, air, PVC, gas, condensate, and drainage lines; cut and thread pipe and sweat joints and make glued or mechanical joints in water, steam, air, PVC, gas, condensate, and drainage lines; perform preventative maintenance on pumps, receivers, coils, hot water generators, water softeners, ice machines, room heater, filters, and domestic boilers; repair leaks in water, steam, air, PVC, gas, condensate, drainage lines, valves and equipment; clean drains in branch lines; and perform other plumbing tasks as needed or assigned.
  • Perform tasks related to the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning trade: repair and/or replace pumps, motors, mechanical devices, pneumatic devices, gauges, valves on heating, air handling, and air conditioning units, and minor duct work; repair leaks in chilled water, steam, water, and pneumatic lines; do preventative maintenance on all equipment to include belts, filters, greasing, bearings, thermocouples, cleaning, painting, adjustment of dampers and controls, and tightening of mechanical fasteners; repair, replace, and perform preventative maintenance on furnaces, gas fired heating boilers, air condition units, water heaters, air handling equipment, steam, hot water, electric, heating and cooling systems, and air compressors; install, repair, and replace window air conditioners, curbs and roof flashing around roof mounted units; and perform other HVAC tasks as needed or assigned.
  • Perform other maintenance related tasks: prioritize and complete work orders and service requests, and complete the required paper work and/or enter information in computer; maintain student rooms, lounges, common areas, halls, mechanical rooms, work areas, custodial equipment rooms, stairwells, steps, all other interior and exterior building components, interior and exterior of university vehicles, inventory and inventory records, and inform supervisors of needed supplies; repair and replace appliances, venetian blinds, drapes, and related hardware; perform minor repair on elevator cars and doors; load and unload supply trucks; properly use, store, and take care of tools, supplies, equipment, and two-way radio; re-assign non-skilled duties to student help while monitoring and assisting in training students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
