What Your Job Will Be Like:

New Mexico’s Advanced & Exploratory Demonstrator Systems department (02433) is currently seeking an experienced R&D Mechanical Technologist to join their fast-paced, dynamic, multidisciplinary, and future-focused team.

The selected candidate will support technology and capability maturation and demonstration to shape and inform both current and future ND systems.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

• Team with engineering staff to develop and execute mechanical assemblies of test and flight hardware
• Utilize computer aided design (CAD) and additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities to design and build fixturing devices
• Perform mechanical fabrication and rework (machining and cutting)
• Perform and support environmental characterization testing
• Operate heavy equipment (e.g., forklift, overhead crane, etc.)
• Integrate electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitive components into broader assemblies
• Assist in conducting experiments and acquiring data
• Modify hardware in quick-turn scenarios
• Assist in managing lab and assembly bay space in coordination with both electrical and mechanical teams on multiple projects

Organization 02433 partners across Sandia with a variety of component, design definition, test and evaluation, foundational research, computational simulation, and intelligence analysis organizations.

External partners include DOD stakeholders (USN and USAF), DOE/NNSA, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the United Kingdom’s Atomic Weapons Establishment, and the Kansas City National Security Campus.

Some travel is required for this position.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

• A High School diploma, plus 3 years directly related experience; or equivalent experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job
• Machining experience, including use of lathes, mills, drill presses, etc.
• Knowledge and experience with technical drawings and working with manufacturing (ML) to procure part fabrication
• Experience designing, fabricating, assembling, and test/analysis of flight payloads
• The ability and willingness to travel at least once per quarter, as needed (domestically, and occasionally internationally)
• The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

• An Associate’s degree in Machining Technology or a relevant field
• Demonstrated experience with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, etc.)
• Hands-on experience with complex mechanical components and systems
• Demonstrated experience with mechanical fabrication
• Strong mechanical and/or electrical design skills
• Demonstrated experience planning, executing, and documenting tests
• Demonstrated experience developing and delivering fieldable and/or flight-quality hardware
• Experience within the ND A&E mission area
• The proven ability to work both within a team as well as independently
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment; adapting to changing priorities and sometimes vague requirements
• The demonstrated ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects within appropriate scope, budget, and timeframe

About Our Team:

New Mexico A&E Demonstrator Systems (02433) is a dynamic, multidisciplinary team that anticipates the future, and identifies, pairs, and integrates technologies and capabilities to shape and inform both current and future ND systems. System demonstrators allow us to prove technology interfaces early, driving down uncertainty and reducing risks to weapons programs.

While preparing the nation to meet immediate and emerging threats, our concepts are inherently agile and resilient. This critical demonstrator work to advance component design and assess readiness helps us understand the trade space, accept risks early, and adjust quickly. We collaborate across Sandia, partnering with other A&E departments, as well as external entities.

Security Clearance:

Salary Range:

$66,900 - $128,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
