Position Summary
Located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has been twice named in the top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute with academic programs in over 100 disciplines. Math and Engineering Faculty work closely with students in and out of the classroom to help them maximize their success. Faculty serve as advisors to student clubs such as the AMATYC Student Mathematics League, Student Research League, Society of Black Engineers, Society of Women Engineers and Robotics clubs. Our faculty have presented at AMATYC, MMATYC, NCTM, and MCTM conferences. Our faculty are also engaged in ongoing grant-funded projects, partnering with the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, NAVAIR, and other community partners. Math and Engineering faculty teach a range of courses using both Open Educational Resources and Direct Digital Access software. Using both synchronous and asynchronous modes of instructional delivery, our faculty focus on student engagement and success through critical thinking, analytical and hands-on approaches. CSM faculty are expected to be knowledgeable of learning management systems in addition to face-to-face and innovative technology based instructional delivery approaches. As such, we are seeking an innovative educator to join our math faculty.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Math faculty teach a wide range of developmental, 100 and 200 level undergraduate classes including developmental mathematics, Quantitative Reasoning, Statistics, College Algebra, Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations.

The faculty member will be responsible for teaching 30 credit hours throughout the academic year. Flexibility is required to accommodate varying course offerings from one semester to another. Assignments may include day sections, evening sections, and may be held at any location where CSM offers classes. Summer teaching opportunities may be available.

The hired candidate may be asked to teach dual enrollment classes through the Early College program. The role is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning and success. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and demonstrating a commitment to professional development thorough participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.

DUTIES AND STANDARDS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Teach 30 credits of courses per contract year in the Mathematics and Engineering department, which may include morning, day, evening, weekend, online, or accelerated formats
Design assignments that incorporate students’ program of study and connect to the mathematics discipline
Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approaches
Meet with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college students
Incorporate culturally relevant pedagogies into the teaching and learning process
Demonstrate ability to communicate orally and in writing and read and interpret information
Deliver instruction to diverse student populations, with varied levels of learning and preparation
Use student engagement strategies that support completion and student success goals
Provide feedback students can use to improve their performance
Develop or use Open Education Resource (OER) materials as an instructional tool
Maintain an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences, and activities
Possess mastery of appropriate computer operation skills
Minimum Education and Training
Minimum of a master's degree in mathematics or closely related field, with 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics coursework required
Preferred qualifications include having one year of full-time or two years of adjunct instructional experience at the post-secondary level. This experience may encompass teaching courses, overseeing and organizing learning experiences, assessing student achievement, contributing to curriculum development, participating in policy and procedure formulation, and evaluating program effectiveness. Preference is given to those with experience at the community college level.
Ability to use word processing, basic internet applications, graphing calculators, and mathematics educational software, including a learning management system such as MyLearning (D2L) to support and facilitate instructional delivery
Ability to teach face to face, web, web-hybrid, and hyflex modalities.
