As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, you will prepare and administer radioactive drugs (radiopharmaceuticals) to patients for imaging or treatment, primarily for diagnosing cancers and cardiovascular diseases. This is done through operating specialized imaging devices like gamma cameras and PET scanners. You will work with department associates and medical staff to improve care and workflow by providing support,educationandassistanceto customers and fellow colleagues. This role is essential to the Imaging Department, allowing the team to effectively support patients and provide essential treatments.
A caregiver in this position works varying 8 or 10-hour shifts, Monday-Friday and rotating weekends and holidays.The schedule isprovided4-6 weeksin advance.
The caregiver may work at Martin and St. Lucie County sites.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform nuclear medicine procedures according to the manual and written order.
Utilize equipment safely and according to manufacturer'srecommendation.
Perform quality control on the gamma camera and other equipment asrequired.
Ensure that all equipment is appropriatelymaintained,calibratedand working properly.
Report equipment problems to supervisor or service personnel asrequiredanddiscontinueuse of equipment until repairs have been completed when the equipment problem causes image quality degradation or safety issues.
Review the physician's orders todeterminethe proper isotoperequiredfor each type of test ordered and order the necessary isotope from the pharmacy.
Explain the procedures to the patient,parentor legal guardian and obtain written consent for all invasive procedures prior to the exam.
Complete site identification procedure prior to the start of invasive procedure.
Utilizeappropriate skillsin accurately and descriptively documentingpatient'spertinent clinical information, medical history,allergiesand other pertinent information.
Consult withradiologistor referring physician regarding contraindications toorderedexam.
Respond to emergency situations, i.e., contrast reactions and medical emergencies according to departmental,clinicand hospital policy.
Advise the nurse in charge of the patientofany unusual occurrence which happened to the patient while in the Imaging Department.
Operate the required digital equipment effectively in the production,storageand transmission of images.
Report any equipment problems, safetyissuesor patient complaintsto supervisor.
Provide backupassistanceto other associates in the department upon completion of duties or as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate from an accredited School of Nuclear Medicine Technology
Florida License as a General Radiographer (RAD)
Registered with the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) or certified with the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB)
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Knowledge of federal and stateregulatories
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Two years of experience as an Imaging Technologist in an acute care imaging setting
Physical Requirements:
- Special Demands: Needs minimal sustained direction in assessing needs, carrying out departmental and professional responsibilities; self-starting and self-motivating; working hours may exceed eight (8) hours per day and is based on what is needed to accomplish work at hand.
- Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests and to work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
