Description
The Harold Alfond Forum Ice Arena Operations Technician is responsible for assisting with the safe, efficient, and effective operation, maintenance, and upkeep of the Harold Alfond Forum Ice Arena. This position supports daily ice arena operations, including ice maintenance and resurfacing, equipment operation and maintenance, event support, facility cleanliness, and supervision of student employees.
The position works closely with Ice Arena management, Facilities Management, and campus partners to support programs, events, and activities held within the Harold Alfond Forum. During periods when ice production is offline or during the off-season, this position will assist the Grounds Department with seasonal maintenance, facility projects, and other operational needs.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the daily operations of the Ice Arena, including supervising and providing direction to student employees.
  • Work closely with the Forum Manager and Assistant Manager to support University departments and events, including Facilities Management, Student Affairs, Institutional Advancement, Conference Services, and other campus partners.
  • Maintain the ice surface for a variety of ice-related activities by operating, monitoring, and maintaining ice resurfacing equipment; maintaining accurate records; and ensuring the ice schedule remains on track while providing a safe, high-quality skating surface.
  • Report equipment issues, maintenance concerns, and operational challenges to the Forum Manager and Assistant Manager to minimize disruptions to arena operations.
  • Assist with skate sharpening operations and perform basic cashiering responsibilities.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety standards throughout Ice Arena spaces to ensure a welcoming environment for visitors, guests, and event participants.
  • Serve as a building operations lead worker, providing oversight and support for Ice Arena maintenance activities and daily operations.
  • Provide excellent customer service during skating events and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, University partners, and members of the public.
  • Serve as a backup resource for Ice Arena management and assist with the implementation and enforcement of facility policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Coordinate and assist with maintenance activities in collaboration with the Facilities Management department.
  • Perform seasonal grounds maintenance duties, including watering, mowing, trimming, raking, and other related tasks.
  • Assist with basic construction and grounds-related projects, including ditch digging, concrete work, asphalt repairs, fence installation, and sign installation.
  • Complete special work orders, including deliveries, pickups, facility setups and breakdowns for events, and other operational needs.
  • Support events and activities throughout the Harold Alfond Forum, including the performance gym and other facility spaces, during non-peak Ice Arena periods.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Five years of related experience required. A degree in Business Administration, Facility Management, Sport Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the operation, management, and promotion of ice facilities, equipment, and systems; familiarity with applicable safety standards for sports facilities; mechanical aptitude; and demonstrated ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance of equipment and facilities required.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to safely operate machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of clients, external service providers, University faculty, staff, and other campus partners.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays on a regular basis during peak utilization periods, as needed.
  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment as needed.
  • Ability to safely operate grounds power equipment.
