What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking one or more postdoctoral appointees to join our quantum optics and quantum sensing group at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at Sandia National Laboratories (New Mexico). The focus of this group is discovering and utilizing solid state defect centers in wide bandgap semiconductors for quantum information and quantum sensing.

We currently have positions open in the two following areas.

  • We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a strong background in condensed matter physics, nitrogen-vacancy quantum sensing, and/or scanning probe microscopy to develop and utilize quantum sensing capabilities for the study of quantum materials.
  • We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a strong background in quantum control and/or detection of single photon emitters to help discover new quantum defects and characterize the physical properties of emergent quantum defects in semiconductors such as diamond and silicon.

You will work closely with a team of staff, postdocs, graduate students, and technologists who are experts in quantum information sciences, solid state single photon emitters, and nitrogen-vacancy magnetometry.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected candidate must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in related physical science fields, such as physics, optical engineering, electrical engineering, or material science.
  • Proficiency in Python, data analysis, instrumentation, and hardware development
  • Evidence of research achievements as demonstrated in the form of technical publications and presentations

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Strong background in physics of materials
  • Strong background in quantum sensing with quantum defects, such as the nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond
  • Strong background in quantum control of single quantum defects in diamond or similar semiconductors
  • Strong background in scanning probe microscopy
  • Background in optics and building optical systems

About Our Team:

The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies is a Department of Energy-funded nanoscience research facility that provides users from around the world with access to state-of-the-art expertise and instrumentation in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment with a focus on nanoscience integration. The Quantum Materials Systems (QMS) thrust at CINT has a focus on understanding and controlling quantum effects of nanoscale materials and their integration into systems spanning multiple length scales. The QMS thrust has world-leading capabilities in synthesis, fabrication, characterization, and modeling of quantum materials, devices, and computing systems.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
