What Your Job Will Be Like:

Organization 05442, Navigation Guidance & Control (NGC), is currently seeking a Flight Software Engineer to join their team.

The selected candidate will contribute to an embedded flight software product for hypersonic strike applications with over a decade of successful flight test pedigree. The baseline software product for the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) program, developed by NGC staff, requires integration of emerging technologies based on a planned series of block upgrades. Efforts will focus on embedded software development activities enabling the integration of new capabilities, algorithms, and avionics devices. The DevOps culture of Organization 05442 enables staff to contribute to all areas of software design, development, and test.

Successful candidates will collaborate with sister NGC organizations who focus on low-to-mid Technology Readiness Level (TRL) technologies. These organizations are managed as a team and the unified goal is to mature NGC technologies from concepts to integrated flight system solutions. One has opportunities to contribute at each TRL as technologies are matured with the final system application in mind.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

  • Implement the software development lifecycle process for Sandia's contributions to hypersonic flight systems
  • Develop embedded software for highly reliable real-time flight systems
  • Write device drivers for real-time operating systems and integrate new avionics components with NGC software hosted on the flight computer
  • Assist with software development associated with software test fixtures such as Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) test assets
  • Develop CI/CD solutions and develop/maintain cross-platform build systems
  • Support system-level hardware testing including participation on-console with Assembly, Integration, and Test teams
  • Architect and implement software test methodologies
  • Contribute to software architecture design and development
  • Coordinate and collaborate with external program partners to meet program-level objectives and deliverables

*Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • DOE Q security clearance or equivalent required to start.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Computer Systems candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience installing, configuring, integrating, and deploying new hardware and software within existing systems.
  • Experience in systems administration within Unix/Linux and/or Windows environments.
  • Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Experience leading software development and/or multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience with common computer networking protocols.
  • Expertise with common software configuration management tools.
  • Expertise in object-oriented programming.
  • Expertise in programming Java 8 through Java 17 or more recent.
  • Expertise in programming C++2003 through C++20 or more recent.
  • Expertise in programming C# for graphical applications in a Windows environment.
  • Familiarity developing software for real-time operating systems.
  • Expertise with Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) principles and practice using GitLab CI/CD.
  • Expertise with Containers and Container Orchestration.
  • Experience with software unit, integration, and/or functional testing.
  • Experience in the application of software engineering standards.
  • Experience in application of fundamental Systems Engineering principles.
  • The ability to collaborate and contribute as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Proven strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • An active DOE Q-level security clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top Secret.

About Our Team:

The Navigation, Guidance, & Control (NGC) Department (5442) develops and delivers integrated, system-level NGC solutions for the hypersonic strike domain space, enabled by embedded software development and test for real-time applications. Our multi-disciplinary team establishes confidence in our software products through high fidelity six degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) dynamic modeling & simulation, Continuous Integration & Continuous Development (CI/CD), Software-in-the-Loop (SWIL) testing, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) testing, and integrated system hardware testing. We work closely with sister departments to mature emerging NGC technologies and verify weapon system integration compatibility. Sponsored by the Department of Defense, we team with industry throughout the development cycle which ultimately culminates in high consequence flight test demonstrations. We take pride in our reputation for delivering robust, high performance hypersonic flight control solutions for our sponsors and a responsibility for transitioning this next-generation technology to industry to enable an operational hypersonic strike capability for the warfighter.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
