Job Description
The Financial Officer I will support the financial operations of the UAB Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), an interdisciplinary research center that promotes and facilitates HIV-related research across UAB and its partner institutions. This position will assist the CFAR fiscal team by providing daily fiscal services that include monitoring budgets and expenditures against sponsor and internal budgets, reconciling financial activity, and providing timely financial information to CFAR leadership, faculty and staff.General Responsibilities
Serves as a key contributor to the financial integrity and operational stability of the assigned unit by applying established principles of accounting, financial analysis, and budget management.
Supports informed decision-making through consistent evaluation of financial activity, reliable reporting practices, and adherence to institutional policies.
Strengthens fiscal operations by maintaining effective financial systems, coordinating with university stakeholders, guiding departmental personnel, and ensuring alignment with broader organizational standards.
Contributes to the responsible use of financial resources and fosters continuity across financial, administrative, and vendor-related processes.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
May make decisions regarding the use of financial resources. Provides financial guidance to assigned staff and appropriate University personnel and coordinates integration with university accounting system.
Uses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures specific to accounting, financial analysis and budgetary processes.
Manages assigned departmental accounts and provides ongoing financial analysis of departmental accounting functions.
Assures proper accounting for state, grant, contract and/or revenue accounts assigned.
Provides analysis of gross expenditures and makes recommendations for maintaining fiscal stability.
Assists in developing and administering budgets. Provides fiscal and budgetary services to an assigned unit.
May establish and maintain financial management databases and systems which conform to standard accounting practices.
Monitors adherence to financial policy and procedure. Develops and provides financial statements and reports to upper management on regular or requested basis.
May supervise departmental accounting operations and activities which could include approval and processing of disbursement and internal requisitions.
May prepare and/or supervise processing of departmental personnel action forms and as well as assume some payroll duties. Acts as liaison with appropriate University financial staff.
Preferred
Preferred degree fields include Business, Finance, Accounting, Program Management or another related field.
Related experience may include financial account management, budget monitoring, account reconciliation, financial reporting, grants or contracts administration, program management, or financial administration in a university, healthcare or research environment.
